So we decided to go to the mall the other day to pick up some new clothes for Kaleb since he is growing so darn fast and has outgrown all his 0-3 month stuff. We have all Kobe's old clothes but all his 3-6 month stuff are summer clothes and seeing as how we are currently getting 8 inches of snow here today, summer clothes just aren't going to work. Anyway while we were walking around at the mall we passed a kiosk selling those Hermit Crabs that have their shells painted with all different kinds of designs. I needed to change Kaleb's diaper so I took him to the bathroom and left the kids with Kevin looking at the Hermit Crabs. I got back from changing him and they were still totally entertained with the Hermit Crabs so I decided to sit down on a nearby bench and nurse Kaleb. I started thinking about how much fun it is to have pets when you are a little kid and how I had so many pets growing up, cats, hamsters, dogs, etc. and how we don't let the kids have pets (besides our dog) because we prefer not to have animals in the house. Anyway, I decided we should let them get the Hermit Crabs because they are pretty low maintenance, won't stink up the house or shed or tear anything up like most other pets would. Kevin agreed and the kids were so surprised and excited when we told them they could take some home so we went ahead and spent $50 on 2 Hermit Crabs - the kids picked out one painted like Spongebob and one like Patrick (of course), a little plastic cage for them and some food. Huge rip off, I know, but what the heck the kids are thrilled. So we take SpongeBob and Patrick home and Katie says she wants to research Hermit Crabs online so I find a website all about Hermies and print out everything they have. We start reading it and realize that our Hermies are probably going to die because they need a warm, humid environment which is the exact opposite of where we live. So Kevin decided to take Katie and Kobe to the pet store to get a few things to help our Hermies survive. A few things turned into a new bigger tank, an under-tank heater, calcium sand, some kind of mulch bedding, a new water dish, rocks and drift wood for them to crawl on and some other crap I can't remember. Anyway, the total bill came out to $150! So in addition to the $50 we already paid, we spent a total of $200 for some crabs! I think I would have rather spent that on a couple nice crab dinners at Red Lobster! Oh well, the kids are happy and apparently so are SpongeBob and Patrick because they crawl all over the place in their new tank where as they just sat there and didn't do anything in the old one. I have to admit, they are pretty amusing to watch. So anyway, to make a really long story short - we now have a couple new, very expensive crustaceans living in our home. :)
Updates....
Katie...
We did the school tour at Evergreen Academy on Monday and all absolutely loved it. It is a really beautiful campus and everyone there was incredibly nice. It is a really small school, there probably won't be more than 10 kids in her class which makes me really happy. She will get a lot of one-on-one time with the teacher and a small class means the teacher can really get to know and care about each student. I really think it will be a great environment for her and am excited for her because I think she's really going to be happy there. Oh and how cool is this? Part of their P.E. program is swimming lessons during the 1st and 4th quarter and skiing lessons in the 2nd and 3rd quarter! LOL - I wish I could have gone to a school like that! They also do a ton of really cool field trips and have 3 recesses per day. I'm really impressed with this school because not only do they have incredible test scores and great academics, they also seem to put a lot of importance on letting the kids just be kids and have fun.
I think we have decided to let her go to her first sleep-away camp this summer, it's only a few miles from our house and a bunch of her friends are going so she will already know kids there. I can't believe she is turning 8 this summer, I'm excited and terrified at the same time about her growing up.
Kobe...
It looks like Kobe has finally turned the corner on the potty training thing. After Kaleb was born he started regressing big time and it really freaked me out, I'd never had a kid do that before. Now he is back to where he was before and is pretty much keeping his undies dry all day. He'll have an accident once in a while but it's always just a tiny bit and then he grabs himself to stop it and finishes on the potty. His favorite thing to do now is pee outside, he LOVES to go outside and pee! Kevin's thought on the matter is "Who doesn't like to pee outside?" - Men!
Kobe had been complaining about his shoes a lot so we took him to Striderite while we were at the mall to get sized for new shoes and he is a size 9!! I think he is part big-foot or something!
He is so funny and makes me laugh so much, he is all boy - rough and tumble, but also so loving and sweet and silly. He's going to be lost without Katie here when she goes to camp and especially once she starts school, he adores her and they play together all day. Hopefully Kaleb can fill that playmate role soon.
Kaleb...
It blows me away how fast my babies grow in their first 6 months. I missed our appt, so I won't be getting him measured till Monday but I will be suprised if he hasn't doubled his weight. He is getting so chunky and really long. We bought him size 2 diapers yesterday because the 1's had gotten way too small. He fills out 3-6 month clothes and will probably be out of them in a matter of weeks. He's also awake most of the day now and is super alert and responsive. He is sleeping great at night so I'm crossing my fingers that he will stay a good sleeper!
Well I've got a ton of work piled up that I've been avoiding all morning but I guess I better get done. The business is really starting to pick up which is good but keeps me super busy!~
